Often, when new developments come up in Toronto, very few people really know what is going on in the city. There is some curiosity, a lot of construction workers and sites going up but no real insight to what’s about to come to the city. Some days, we are too busy to care and other days, no one gives us the real information we need to make informed decisions about the future of our beloved City.
We are here to tell you about a fabulous new development that is taking place in the West Don Lands. It’s time to go for a walk down memory lane…
The Past:
There was every intention of the West Don Lands becoming a neighbourhood. At one point, it was quite a lovely one. A while back, we even had merchants in the area, particularly pork packers, soap manufacturers, cement firms and distilleries. In 1989, that all quite literally, ‘poofed.’ The Provincial and Municipal governments had announced ‘Ataratiri’, a plan to transform the land into housing for more than 10,000 people.
By 1992, $280 Million had been spent on the location with no results. The money was not even used to start anything but to ask other businesses to ‘leave’ and finish things.
The Present:
Everyone involved in the project is working really hard to ensure the launch on time for the Pan Am Games in 2015. With River City Phase 1 & 2 up, it’s time to start thinking about the next Phase. Where does that bring you? To the most important piece of the puzzle.
The government and the developer have gone head-to-head on the investment of this project, meaning to create a neighbourhood that is sustainable, with classy architecture and ultimately a hidden jewel within Toronto, creating a prime investment opportunity for you.
The Future:
The unknown is always a fun factor in anything one does and the most important question for anyone is what does the future hold?
Here are some facts:
– West Don Lands Total Size is: 80 Acres (Six Times of the Neighbouring Distillery District).
– Only 5 people actually lived there in 2006 and had packed up by 2011 according to a Census taken that year.
Here are some predictions:
– It’s predicted, that by 2020, 12,000 people will be living there according to the Waterfront Toronto estimate.
– 6,000 total residential units to be built by 2020.
– A ‘Relief’ Subway Line will be built.
There is no hope for history to repeat itself, ladies and gentlemen, you will be looking at a success story.
