The Regent Park of the 1950s was supposed to be a neighbourhood within a park. Buildings were surrounded by green spaces, with ample lawns and trees. Yet the public housing neighbourhood lacked formal park space and declined. Now with its reconstruction and transformation into an outstanding mixed-income neighbourhood, Regent Park finally has its namesake park.
Local councillor Pam McConnell joined city of Toronto staff, community members and event partners Toronto Community Housing and the Daniels Corporation to open the park to the public on the first day of summer on June 21. The six-acre park spans the block from Dundas Street to the south, Sumach Street to the west, Sackville Street to the east and Oak Street to the north. It includes a multi-purpose green space, plaza for community events, playground, splash pad, community gardens, a dog off-lease area, greenhouse, bake oven and walkways amidst lush landscaping.
The $6.2 million project is an important part of the community’s transformation into an attractive and desirable neighbourhood. The new Regent Park joins the neighbouring Regent Park Aquatic Centre as two outstanding amenities in the reconstructed community. It will be an important gathering space for local residents and has the amenities to attract Torontonians from other neighbourhoods as well—promoting social cohesion.
The park will be unique for its bake oven, greenhouse and community gardens, which will encourage neighbours to come together to grow and prepare food together as a community. It will help to keep the park vibrant and discourage nefarious activities. The park was also conceived to accommodate farmers’ markets, arts events and public gatherings with its plaza and lawns.
Regent Park is shaping up to be one of the best contemporary city neighbourhoods of our time—a revitalization triumph over the area’s previous isolation and social challenges. With polished architecture and high-quality landscaping, the new condo buildings that combine market and subsidized housing stand out positively.
The community’s amenities are impressive. In addition to the new park, Regent Park now boasts its own aquatic centre and the Daniels Spectrum cultural hub. It will soon also have a community centre and athletic grounds.
Regent Park’s transformation into an attractive contemporary neighbourhood with rental buildings, market condos, townhouses and commercial space has been impressive. Its community amenities are top notch. With an impressive new park, Regent Park adds another jewel to its crown as one of the city’s best contemporary neighbourhoods.
