In a city where many have long bemoaned the state of waterfront, Waterfront Toronto has a lofty goal. The government partnership was charged with transforming the downtown east waterfront into an attractive community where people would want to live and visit. It was little more than a series of derelict industrial buildings and parking lots east of the Redpath Sugar Refinery. Now, it’s set to become one of the city’s best neighbourhoods.
Waterfront Toronto’s opening salvos were the stunning Sugar Beach and Sherbourne Common parks. Sugar Beach brought a sandy beach to the area with Muskoka chairs and umbrellas as well as a lush plaza that accommodates concerts and events. Sherbourne Common was built atop a stormwater treatment facility and features unique ornamental water features carrying the treated water back to the lake amidst a striking cafe pavilion, lawns and a splashpad. The two spaces were linked by a tree-lined promenade at the water’s edge.
Monde is the East Bayfront’s first condo development. Developer Great Gulf commissioned architect Moshe Safdie, who also designed Montreal’s iconic Habitat 67. The distinctive 40 storey tower will stand next to the tranquil water features of Sherbourne Common. Available units range from 500-1400 square feet. The tower will have a folded façade to maximize views of Lake Ontario, with terraces on the upper floors facing the lake.
To the south, Tridel and Hines are developing the midrise Bayside community. Aqualina Condos is the first release in a planned $1.1 billion development by the picturesque promenade at the water’s edge. The condo will have 363 units, with units on sale now ranging from 576-1343 square feet. The buildings in the Bayside development will feature retail, cafes and restaurants fronting onto the lake.
Monde Condos and Aqualina at Bayside represent a rare opportunity to buy into a picturesque new waterfront community built to the highest standards. It will be a neighbourhood built around lively public spaces designed for the city to embrace. Waterfront Toronto needs nothing less to fulfill its mandate of building the kind of waterfront people want to visit and invest in.
